This democracy includes the wholesale privatisation of the Iraqi economy and the creation of a new patent law which introduces a system of monopoly rights for seed patent owners (guess who). This means that Iraqi farmers will have to buy seeds for planting and will be forbidden from saving and replanting them.

The farmers won't be forbidden to save and replant seeds. They will be unable to save and replant Monsanto and other GM seeds because the crops that grow from these seeds don't produce new seed. You have to go and buy more seed to grow another crop. There are no patents on nature's seeds so if they have their own they can keep using them. The Monsanto seeds will probably perform better and give farmers a better, larger, more resilient crop (hopefully).... frankly I'm glad they won't produce seed as it's also a way of safeguarding against cross-pollination... which is already happening here in Australia by the way from some of the early test GM crops.... when controls weren't so stringent. |
