The liberation and democratisation of Iraq has reached a crucial stage. The new Iraqi PM is trying to guide this fragile state to a brighter future. We cannot let the forces of fear and superstition stand in his government’s way. Outlaw Shiite cleric Moktada al Sadr and his rag tag army of criminals and misfits must not be allowed to stall Iraq’s inexorable progress to freedom and democracy. And this is why coalition forces under the instructions of PM Allawi are carefully making their way into Najaf and trying to bring the so-called Medhi Army into line.

But if al Sadr doesn’t see reason and peacefully give up his threats and blackmail against the legitimate government of Iraq then he must realise that Coalition forces will not keep fighting with one hand tied behind their back.

The people of Iraq want stability and security. And they know that with their new government and strong world leaders in President Bush and PMs Howard and Blair they will not be abandoned. One can only imagine how Iraqis feel about the cheap populist nonsense peddled by opposition leader Latham in Australia; willing to leave them in the lurch with terrorists and criminals.

If we are to win the war on terror we must win in Iraq. Illegitimate clerics such as al Sadr must not be allowed to stop us winning.
