Reading this pithy quote I became momentarily confused.

In the first sentence Albert says "I want to know how". But doesn't the rest of the quote suggest that he really wanted to know why and not how?

That thar's an old dead Jew that never did nothin but cipher'n. Thing is he dern't never make no nothin! He git ta cipher'n but cain't make a dern thing. Well, boys 'n girls, I can cipher 'n make things too - so that make me twice as smart as this here old dead Jew.
