The theory that 44.1khz was adequate for all music recordings was written by a small bunch of lunatics inc marketing types without nearly enough research and collaboration.

No one says they can hear the digital switching. Think of it as a dog whistle blaring along everytime you put on a CD...

Some pundits also suggest that even though we are not capable of hearing such high frequencies, that the noise up there affects the way that the lower overtones are produced.. (the ones we can hear)

If we can't hear it, its not there theory? But the ripple effect, the ripple effect, and stop blowing that dog whistle at the same switching rhythm all night.

Most, if not all, humans cannot hear the "switching noise" that you refer to in digital recordings. There have been studies on this and this is a fact. Switching noise is filtered with an inductor and a capacitor - simple circuitry will eliminate almost all audible noise; a little more complex (but common) circuitry will eliminate all audible noise to humans. The only people who ever complain about "switching noise" allegedly associated with digital recording are fruit-loop audiophile geeks who sit around reading distortion and noise statistics published in tech articles. They don't actually "hear" anything of the sort. Moreover, if you are listening to a musical recording straining your brain to make believe that you can hear switching noise, you are definitely an old crusty "they made them better in my day" technophobes. The noise, distortion, and compression associated with analogue is so grotesque, so obvious, so awful, that they even had to invent box devices just to crudely attempt to filter the noise, expand the sound, cancel distortion, etc. just to make the sounds resemble what was actually recorded. The bottom line: if analogue was better, we'd all still be listening to records and 8-track tapes. Obviously, there's a reason we don't. Some foolish people tend to overlook the obvious in their rationalizations.

The article was informative and you make some good points, especially that one about how "terrorists" are gleefully noting the US version of Democracy.
This is an important point because if they "the terrorists" capture anyone in future, they will simply detain them with no charge and no options etc.... and say that if it was OK for the U.S. to do it to Hicks and others then no-one should have a problem with them doing the same thing.

Luckily my hearing is so fucked (by industrial noise) - everything sounds great! I'd be lucky if 4Khz switching caused a problem for my hearing. Just like John Howard who never has to hear anything unpleasant anyone says to him.

Rupert Neve, the man with perhaps more credentials in the audio field than anyone else living has suggested that the current 44.1 khz method of creating audio CDs is very flawed and that even a crappy analogue vynil record is more soothing to the ear and mind of the listener than 'any' CD.

The reason is because of digital switching noises that occur on 'every' CD in the high frequency band that are unrelated to the audio material.

With analogue recordings the sound is certainly not as accurate but the anolamlies and distortion create by a record player are related to the harmonic content of the material - hence soothing.

With digital recordings, at least at 44.1khz (which they all currently are) the switching noises are unrelated to the material and although not obvious to the ear the switching noise is annoying and does not allow one to relax as one would to an analogue recording.

Just thought I would clear that up.
