Predominately a civilian city and without any real tactical advantage to be gained, it was smothered with wave upon wave of massive incediary type heavy bombs. Over 170,000 people killed overnight. (At Hiroshima the Yanks managed only half that. They actually managed to kill more people in Tokyo with 'regular' bombs than in Hiroshima.)
